 2023 Preview 


       Pike County completed the 2022 season with a 8-4 record. With their 5-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 3A region two, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Pike County lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Mobile Christian team by a score of 27-7.

       The Bulldogs had some tough luck last season as three of their four losses were by less than eight points. The Bulldogs hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Hurt saw improvement as they won eight games following a 0-9 record in 2021.

       Since 2010, Pike County has gone a combined 83-59. Their 58.5% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Pike County has finished a combined 198-95. Their 68.0% winning percentage ranks 8th in Class 3A and 50th in the AHSAA. The Bulldogs have been successful on the football field with twenty-one winning seasons during this time.




       The Bulldogs are led by head coach Mark Hurt who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 8-4 record in his first season at Pike County. The Bulldogs saw improvement from a 0-9 record the season before coach Hurt arrived. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Hurt. Over the course of his career, Coach Hurt's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times and won one region championship.

       Word is the Bulldogs will be much improved in 2023 under Coach Hurt. The team went from zero wins to eight last season.

       The Bulldogs should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage.

       The Bulldogs open the 2023 season at home against region opponent Straughn on Friday, September 1 at Bulldog Stadium. Last year the Straughn Tigers finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 3A region two. The Tigers lost in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs to Thomasville by a score of 20-9.

       Pike County and Straughn have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 7-3-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Straughn winning by a score of 20-19.

       Pike County lost 3A All-State  receiver Ian Foster to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate offensive lineman Keith Williams.
